What Is a Derivative? Gradient of a Curve | IB Maths AA & AI 5.1

In this IB Maths calculus lesson, we introduce the derivative as a gradient function.

This video is for IB Mathematics AA SL, AA HL, AI SL and AI HL students studying Section 5.1 of the syllabus. We focus on what a derivative means and how it can be used to find the gradient of a curve, or more accurately, the gradient of the tangent to a curve, at a given point.
In this lesson, we use notation such as:

f'(x)
dy/dx​

and we look at how a given derivative function can be evaluated to find the gradient at different points along a curve.

Important: in this video, we do not learn how to find the derivative from scratch. That comes later in Section 5.3. Here, the derivative is given, and the goal is to understand what it tells us and how to use it.
This is a useful foundation before studying differentiation rules, tangents and normals, increasing and decreasing functions, stationary points, optimisation and other calculus topics.
